INTRO

CIBJO, the World Jewellery Confederation, represents the interests of individuals, organisations and companies earning their livelihoods from jewellery, gemstones and precious metals. Its membership includes national jewellery and gem association from about 45 countries and many of the international jewellery sector’s leading corporations and service providers.

A key elements of CIBJO’s work is the harmonisation of standards and nomenclature applied by the industry worldwide, and the promotion of responsible business practices through jewellery industry supply chains. These are codified in the CIBJO Blue Books, which are dedicated to specific product categories , like diamonds, coloured gemstones, pearls, precious metals and coral, and also gemmological laboratories, In 2019 CIBJO ratified the Responsible Sourcing Blue Book, which provides a framework and guidance for responsible sourcing practices throughout the jewellery supply chain.

This Responsible Sourcing Toolkit is provided a no cost to all participants in the supply chain worldwide , and is designed to enable them to implement the due diligence measures described in the Responsible Sourcing Blue Book.

BACKGROUND

In January 2019 the CIBJO Board of Directors approved the first edition of the Responsible Sourcing Book, which provides companies in the jewellery supply chain with a framework and guidance for due diligence for the responsible sourcing of gem materials and precious metals.

The toolkit supports the CIBJO Responsible Sourcing Book and has been developed for CIBJO by the Coloured Gemstone Working Group – a body dedicated to helping businesses in the coloured gemstone supply chain be more sustainable, and make responsible sourcing part of the way they work – and TDI Sustainability, an advisory firm specialising in the jewellery, gemstone and mining industries.

This toolkit is provided for free of charge for all participants of the jewellery supply chain to help companies to source their products and materials more responsibly. This toolkit should be used in conjunction with the CIBJO’s Responsible Sourcing Book.

The toolkit follows the list of actions recommended in the checklist at the end of the CIBJO Responsible Sourcing Book. Companies should review the Book and the checklist before using this toolkit.

HOW TO USE THE TOOLKIT

MODULE 1 MODULE 2 MODULE 3 MODULE 4 MODULE 5 MODULE 6 MODULE 7 MODULE 8 MODULE 9

CIBJO’s Responsible Sourcing Toolkit is designed to enable all participants in the jewellery supply chain, from mine to retail, to conduct the due diligence necessary  to ensure the integrity of their supply chains. The Toolkit comprises 9 modules, each one of which relates to a specific section of CIBJO’s Responsible Sourcing Blue  Book. Each module provides a detailed explanation of that section, and also a number of downloadable files, in MS Word or PDF format, which can be used to do the due diligence described. They include templates, forms, sample declarations and additional information.

While the modules are organised in the sequence that the subjects are addressed in the Responsible Sourcing Blue Book, they do not need to be applied in any particular order. However, it is recommended that users complete the first four modules before continuing one to the remaining six modules. Use of the Toolkit and the downloadable files are free of charge, and many of the tools (or files) can be used with no additional costs involved. A small number will require the support of third-parties, and in those cases the Toolkit will provide a list of alternatives where appropriate.

The nine modules are as follows:

MODULE 1         Establish and Implement a Responsible Supply Chain Policy

MODULE 2         Supply Chain Due Diligence

MODULE 3         Know Your Counterparty and Anti-Money Laundering

MODULE 4         Know Your Counterparty and  Bribery, Facilitation Payments

MODULE 5         Risk Management for “Conflict-Free” Sourcing

MODULE 6         Human Rights

MODULE 7         Product Integrity

MODULE 8         Early Warnings, Grievances  and Whistle-Blowing

MODULE 9         Responsible Sourcing Certification

Each user of the Responsible Sourcing Toolkit bears sole responsibility for manner in which it it is used, and for how he or she applies each of the files that have been downloaded. Users of the Toolkit are responsible for storing the the files that have they downloaded and adapted for their own use. CIBJO bears no responsibility for information provided by individual users, using the downloadable files that made available in the Toolkit.
